The DS is rumored to include the ability to IM other DS's wirelessly in a local network.
From Gamers, "Although Nintendo has not confirmed or even commented on this, CNN/Money is reporting that the upcoming Nintendo DS handheld will include IM functionality. Reportedly, the device will employ RF signals (which are free, unlicensed bandwith) to allow local instant messaging, similar to two-way communication devices. Users supposedly will be able to type in messages via the DS' touch screen and a stylus."
From GamesRadar, "These latest specs - which haven't been confirmed by Nintendo - follow a new analyst report from a company called American Technology Research and seem to confirm that Nintendo have had a dramatic change in philosophy regarding only ever offering 'pure' games machines. The same report again mentioned that the DS would offer wireless connectivity and follows suggestions that the handheld would also be able to play movies."
