Besides earlier connections to the movie versions of Spy Hunter and Metroid, John Woo has apparently been picked by Paramount to direct an adaptation of the Tom Clancy novel Rainbow Six, with its obvious video game tie-ins.
From Ferrago, "Entertainment rag Variety reports that said film rights have been acquired by Paramount Pictures, who have enlisted Woo's directorial talents to turn this promising licence into an action-packed blockbuster. Woo's involvement in all things gaming-turned-cinematic first began a couple of months ago when the director's own studio acquired the rights to create a Metroid Prime film, which was closely followed by news a few weeks ago informing us that Woo has also been signed to direct a Spy Hunter film for Universal. Spy Hunter will star The Rock in lead role."

Do-it-yourself ringtone software encroaching on potential profits, some record labels say.
From Kansas.com, "New software that lets anyone create unique cellular phone rings for free has some record labels worried it will kill the cash cow that is the ringtone.
The software, called Xingtone, evokes the same 'oh wow, oh no' reaction from the labels that greeted the original Napster. The fear is that people will make ringtones out of pirated songs, thus compounding the file-sharing problem while robbing the music industry of a new source of revenue.
The quest for a distinctive cell phone ring has created a $3 billion global market for everything from computer-generated renditions of such classics as The Temptations 'Just My Imagination,' to near-CD-quality snippets of popular songs like OutKast's 'Hey Ya!.'"

Electronics Boutique broke the street release date for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, allowing customers to get the DVD ten days before its official release date of May 25th.
This raised the ire of the DVD's distributer, Warner Home Video, which has since halted all their shipments of their products to the retailer.
From Reuters, "Reports came to WHV from competing retailers large and small, complaining that EB was effectively stealing their business, [Warner Home Video senior VP of domestic sales Jeff Baker] said. 'The callers told us that the DVDs were blowing out the doors at EB, and we have verified several of these reports.'"
"Without question, the 'King' DVD is a prime release for EB's core consumers: video game buyers. 'Obviously this title is right up their alley,' Baker said."
