Recently leaked Xbox 2 specs are fake

The internal Xbox 2 diagrams revealed earlier, now appear to be fake.

From gi, "However, a number of sources who are familiar with Microsoft's console development say that the diagram is not an accurate reflection of the information they've received from the company about Xbox 2 - and could easily have been put together by someone with basic hardware knowledge from publicly available information about the forthcoming system. 'It's not impossible that it's a Microsoft document,' one expert told us this afternoon. 'But some of the figures seem very suspect, and the information included on the diagram looks to me like it reflects the available information about Xbox 2 rather than being a sensible set of information to put on a document for developers.'

Possible Xbox 2 internal specs revealed

A purported system block diagram of the Xbox 2 ("Xenon") internal architecture has surfaced, ahead of its official June announcement.

From Xbit Labs, "A visitor of aChinese BBS revealed information that, he thinks, mirrors some architecture peculiarities of the Microsoft’s Xbox 2 console in addition to the date when the world’s largest software maker is expected to release the official details of the console. Microsoft is expected to formally announce the Xbox 2 (the “Xenon”) on the 2nd of June 2004. The firm may adjust some parameters but will not change the overall structure of the console, the China-based web-site GZeasy.com believes. Microsoft will use IBM’s POWER 64-bit processors in the Xbox 2. The 65nm chips were reportedly taped-out recently and are now evaluated by engineers at Microsoft and IBM, though, the architecture of those microprocessors still remains to be investigated."

Xbox 2 was originally scheduled for Christmas 2004

Sources close to Microsoft have hinted that the successor to the Xbox was originally scheduled for release for Christmas of this year before being pushed back.

From gi, "Internal schedules at Microsoft as recently as last November called for the Xbox 2 to be launched in time for Christmas 2004, sources close to the company have revealed - and the firm is still thought to be considering a launch by mid-2005. Sources at a number of key Xbox developers, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have confirmed that when the company originally revealed the outline specification for Xbox 2 late last year, the company surprised its partners by suggesting that the new hardware would be in shops for Christmas 2004. The system has since slipped from that schedule - which also called for an unveiling of the specification at GDC, at the high-profile press conference which the company eventually used for the launch of the XNA development platform - but Microsoft apparently still has hopes to get the new console out in mid-2005, ahead of the Christmas 2005 release anticipated by most commentators."

Microsoft given patent to use hard drives to store saved game information

This brings up the question on whether or not they filed the patent with Xbox Next in mind or if it was originally intended for the current Xbox system.

From CNet, "U.S. patent 6,716,102, granted Tuesday to Microsoft, covers methods for storing data about games in progress. The patent specifically references "a gaming system (that) includes a hard disk drive for storing applications and other data," indicating Microsoft may be more committed to equipping future Xbox configurations with onboard storage than previously thought."

Dark Sector footage demonstrates potential power of PS3 and Xbox Next

The trailer for the next-gen game Dark Sector demonstrates the anticipated in-game graphics capabilities of the PS3 and Xbox Next.

From gi, "Canadian developer Digital Extremes has released a trailer for its science fiction shooter title Dark Sector, and claimed last Friday that the footage is neither CG nor pre-rendered in any way and actually represents the fruits of its labours on a next-generation console. Or rather, the fruits of its labours on what we expect to see in next-generation consoles - Dark Sector was not developed using PS3 or Xbox 2 development kits, but instead uses components based on the potential specs for both consoles."
