Games With 30+ Achievements Sell More Copies
Games with 30 or more achievements usually sell more copies than games containing less than 30 achievements, says a study done by EEDAR, but how accurate are these results?
In a study done by Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR), games that consist of 30 or more achievements, sell on average, almost 100,000 more copies than games with less than 30 achievements. The study was conducted over the course of three months, beginning in January of 2008 and finishing in March. It tracked the sales of all Xbox 360 games released and sold in the US.
The correlation between the two is interesting; however it is unfair to think that achievements sell games. There are some gamers who buy games specifically for achievements, but most casual gamers do not make their purchase decisions based on achievements.
It should be noted that many games featuring over 30 achievements are also extremely hyped games. For example, Call Of Duty 4, Grand Theft Auto IV, Halo 3, Guitar Hero 2 & 3, and Rock Band all feature well over 30 achievements and are some of the best selling games. But could you think about the Xbox 360 without Halo? Isnt the GTA series famous for going over the edge and doing things that many people would consider immoral? DoesnҒt everyone really want to unleash their inner rockstar?
While this is an interesting study, the results of it should not have been so surprising. It seems that game developers who want to truly create the best games, also want to add to the experience by making a fun, yet challenging set of achievements.

(heh, this is running off of wordpress, I can tell)
I think this is a fairly simple case of "correlation does not imply causation". Developers of good games take time in making rewarding achievements.

yeah that study seems to be full of holes. If someone wanted achievement points it doesnt really matter what game you buy because most games have a 1000 achievement points whether they have 15 achievements (Dynasty Warriors Gundam) or 99 achievements (Orange Box) you still end up with the same score no matter which one you get.

I agree with the ninja, some of the best games only have a few, easy to earn, achievements, but they give really high amounts of gamerscore (like Phantasy Star Universe), so if it's gamerscore these people want, it seems like they'd go with the games that make it easy to get gamerscore, rather than try to get a whole bunch of achievements that take longer to get.

Chris! -- No, this site isn't running off of WordPress.
I'm not so sure about the number of a achievements being the big factor, as I certainly don't play games just for achievements, but some people like quantity over quality. Personal opinion, etc.
